I'm a LLL Leader in Lubbock, TX and have a member who is to have some dental work done in the next few days. I'm having trouble finding any information on ARTACAINE OR SEPTOCAINE. Are these generally considered safe or is there something else she should request?

Margaret:

These are just local anesthetics somewhat like lidocaine and bupivacaine. I would not be overly concerned about their use at all as the local doses are so very low.

To clarify a bit further, if I may, Septocaine is merely the brand name of the drug articaine. It has more epinephrine per dose than does the more commonly used lidocaine, but is, as Dr. Hale has reported, considered safe for pregnant/nursing mothers when used for dental procedures.
